Trust me, you don't want to have a big mess on your hands. To avoid this many homeowners will do what's called crystalline concrete waterproofing. This process uses a catalytic reaction which seal the pores and cracks that happen naturally in concrete. Crystalline waterproofing penetrates into the concrete.

Don't ignore the base cause of any water problem though. You must attend to the original source of the problem before doing any protection methods. Leaving a poorly graded yard or rain water collection issue around will only countact your measures against future damage.
